# Local Setup

> Run the platform against a local Supabase database.

The platform is built with Next.js and Supabase. This guide covers running it locally against a **local Supabase database**, so local development never touches the live database.

## Prerequisites

* [Node.js](https://nodejs.org) (v18 or higher) and npm
* [Docker Desktop](https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop/) (must be running whenever you use the local database)
* [Supabase CLI](https://supabase.com/docs/guides/local-development/cli/getting-started) (macOS: `brew install supabase/tap/supabase`)

> [!TIP]
>
> You don't need to install PostgreSQL. The Supabase CLI runs Postgres and the rest of Supabase in Docker.

## First-time setup

**1. Install dependencies from the repo root**

```bash theme={null}
npm install
```

**2. Start the local Supabase stack from apps/platform**

```bash theme={null}
cd apps/platform
supabase start
```

The first run downloads the Docker images, which takes a few minutes. It then builds the database from `supabase/migrations/` and loads test data from `supabase/seed.sql`.

**3. Create your env file**

```bash theme={null}
cp .env.example .env.local
```

Then replace the `NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY` placeholder with the `ANON_KEY` value from:

```bash theme={null}
supabase status -o env
```

The hCaptcha values in `.env.example` are hCaptcha's official test keys and always pass, so leave them as they are.

**4. Start the app from the repo root**

```bash theme={null}
npx turbo dev --filter=@psc-ai/platform
```

The app runs at [http://localhost:3001](http://localhost:3001).

**5. Log in**

Use one of the [test accounts](/contributing/test-accounts).
